How to make a pop-up card

The card we make at our workshops: one fold, two cuts and an animal that jumps out. You need paper, scissors and a glue stick.

Paper pop-up cards with small paper animals on a table, with scissors, a glue stick and coloured paper scraps

This is the card every child takes home from our pop-up workshop. It takes about twenty minutes.

  1. Fold a sheet of card in half.
  2. On the fold, make two short cuts, two fingers apart and as long as your thumb.
  3. Open the card and push the strip between the cuts inwards, so it makes a step.
  4. Draw and cut out an animal, and glue it to the front of the step.
  5. Close the card, press it flat, and open it again: the animal jumps out.

For older children, make two steps of different sizes and put a tree on the back one.
